A Dedication To Jack Lemmon

Jack Uhler Lemmon III
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, USA
February 8 1925 - June 27 2001

To me, Jack Lemmon represents the heart of comedy, acting and entertaining. You can't look past the undeniable talent he possessed and with that he has imprinted himself into every movie buffs mind. He usually played the parts of the 'average Joe' or the guy who's down on his luck. Yet he could always shine as a comedian, even when the role itself didn't allow much. The roles themselves were quite memorable. Who could forget the his 'cuckoo in the head' character in The Great Race or Jerry from Some Like It Hot. Jack Lemmon was, and in my mind still is,one of a kind and none of the funny guys on screen today have anything against him.

Our choice of Jack Lemmon's best work:

The Apartment (1960) - A movie about a guy who discovers the best way to climb the career ladder. Lend out your place to the bosses, so they can take their arm candy up there for a little late night rendez-vous . Maybe not so good idea when you have to deal with it in the morning.

Some Like it Hot (1959)Jack Lemmon with a wig and wearing pantyhose, do I really need to say anything else. Oh and the blonde bombshell  Marilyn Monroe is in it too.

The Odd Couple(1968) Two totally bizarre men, with different views - on housekeeping, general appearance...You name it. There is just nothing that cracks me up better than Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. In the same movie...

Grumpy Old Men(1993) & Grumpier Old Men(1995) - They annoy the hell out of each other and they can't get along, but they still manage to be friends somehow. John and Max are the senior citizens fighting over chicks, fishing and everything else that is wrong with the universe. And Grandpa is still smoking them Cubans and drinking...and he gets laid? A movie for those who can't get enough of the dynamical duo of Lemmon & Matthau.

The Great Race(1965) - Epic, priceless, golden, hilarious, ridiculous... Just ran out of word to describe Jack Lemmon and his performance in the movie. I couldn't wipe that stupid smug of my face and my expression was constantly 'Damn, this guy is good!'Oh and just to make sure we're on the same page...It's about cars and racing.

Quotes by Jack Lemmon

  • " If you think it's difficult to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball. "
  • "  I won't quit until I get run over by a truck, a producer or a critic."
  • " It's hard enough to write a good drama, it's much harder to write a good comedy, and it's hardest of all to write a drama with comedy. Which is what life is. "
  •  " Stay humble. Always answer your phone - no matter who else is in the car. "
