Three Most Influential Heroines: Hermione Granger, Bella Swan & Katniss Everdeen

The whole world knows the names of Bella Swan and Hermione Granger. One a weird out of place pale girl who falls in love with a vampire and the other a smart overachieving witch who tries to save the whole wizarding AND muggle (that’s you) world. And by next year’s March everyone will also know the name of Katniss Everdeen. A brave and the most anti-stereotype heroine who has always had it hard. Where do they come together? Well they all are characters in a fantasy book that has been made to a movie. And that’s about it. But they all are ridiculously popular. There are a lot of girls who would probably buy everything that says Twilight or Bella Swan on it. “Oh, that’s the nail polish that Bella used in New Moon.” That nail polish would be probably sold out in a matter of days. The Internet is flooded with fan fiction of Hermione Granger. Mostly by pairing her up with a male character from Harry Potter... No matter if it’s Harry himself, Ron or even Draco Malfoy. There are literally THOUSANDS of them. Katniss Everdeen in no doubt will be as big. There was already a talk about The Hunger Games nail polish line and most likely a jewelry line inspired by Katniss’ golden mockingjay  pin.

Let’s start with Hermione as she is the earliest of them to appear. She most definitely was the voice of sense and morality amongst her friends. Always giving her best and by becoming one of the most hard-working and brightest of her age. This girl knew what it meant to be proud of who you are although she had to come to these terms after struggling with her insecurities but the insecurities were the reason why she worked so hard to prove herself.

Bella Swan. She in no way owns any sense of self-preservation. I’d say in some points she was the epitome of stupid but I guess she just was a confused young girl who just didn’t  know what to think exactly. She is my the least favorite out of all three. I felt that she had no self respect and no pride. She based all of her life on a, well, a sparkling vampire. Girls, I’m saying this from the goodness of my heart – it is not romantic when a weird guy sneaks into your bedroom and watches you sleep. Please call the police if something like that happens to you.

Then there was Katniss. I have to place all my information and opinions on the books hence that the movie is not out yet but considering that Suzanne Collins was involved in the writing of the screenplay it’s quite sure that the movie version of Katniss won’t be far off from the book version of her. Katniss was a fighter and no way helpless. I’d rather say the male characters were the ones who were helpless. Katniss was also impulsive and could be over judgemental. She never placed any personal feelings on the way. She did what she had to do. Or what she thought she had to do as sometimes her rational mind was clouded by her firey temper. Which kind of suits as she was the “girl on fire.” She has a lot of heart.

Actually all three characters have a big heart and I guess this is what has made them such loved heroins.

All three of them come from a magical world, at least for the reader. Hermione is literally from a magical world, where there is sorcery, potions, wands and amazing parallel history to our world that J. K. Rowling has created. Bella comes from a world of normality except for the fact that there are werewolves and vampires living among us. The idea of having such things actually exist has drawn millions of people to Twilight. Katniss is the girl from future. We never actually get to know in what year Katniss is living but considering that they know barely anything about our current life then we’d guess she lives in a very distant future. And knowing that there are no limits to accomplishments, it doesn’t seem very far fetched to have things like that, that Suzanne Collins has brought to life so well, to ever exist that has been portrayed in Hunger Games.

They all have also fought their wars. Hermione fought for the human rights. To stop a cruel wannabe dictator from hurting people. She fought for freedom. So did Katniss. They both didn’t want to do it but in the end proved to be important links to winning the war. Bella didn’t fight for any worlds but her own. She fought for the life of her child which by any means isn't less important.

These three young women have had a huge influence on our pop culture and continue to be so. Even though the Harry Potter movies have found an end by now, they are still popular as ever. Also there is only one Twilight Saga movie left but it hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. But The Hunger Games that haven’t even started yet, is already showing promise to be as big as both Harry Potter and Twilight. The characters are already passionately loved and  fans of course have started some smaller  wars. All three shall remain in our pop culture and leave huge shoes to fill for the next generation heroes and heroins.

  2. You're awesome. Harry Potter is my favorite series ever, and The Hunger Games is my second favorite. I agree with your prediction that THG will experience the popularity explosion that occupied Harry Potter for a decade. Bella Swan isn't much of a hero, in my opinion, though.

    1. Thank you, you're very kind. I agree that Bella is not a hero on the terms of Hermione and Katniss but she is a hero to a twelve-year-old girl who thinks that love is in the need and ownage (is that a word?) of a person. So I kind of took no perspective writing this. I considered the view points of the greatest fans of the sagas and based this article on their thoughts. Or more like put myself into their shoes. Trust me, it was hard since I think that Twilight is like communism. Great in theory, shitty in practice.

  3. This is awesome. I totally agree with your viewpoint. My favourite heroines are Hermione, and Katniss. They are just wonderful kickass female role models. Every girl should strive to be like them instead of Bella, (no offense, Stephanie). Too many girls nowadays downplay their intelligence, fortitude and fighting will in order to get boys. My classmates are currently like this, and I suspect that most of them degrade themselves just to fit in. The thing is, society gives girls today a norm to conform to, and that norm is harmful for a teenage girl's psyche, especially when her friends turn against her for defying this standard. I am a teen girl, myself, and when I spoke out for human rights and defended my friends from bullying, for some reason, they all turned against me. That just backs up the theory about girls afraid to be assertive and 'unladylike' in that they don't speak up for themselves nor others. Shouldn't girls stand up for themselves and take no shit from anyone? More articles and more positive female role models like Hermione and Katniss should be created. The female world needs better norms to conform to.

  4. I'm not a Twilight fan at all (I read the books and absolutely hated them), but you offered a very good point about Bella's fight for her daughter. I think it's really well done!
